Counts of House Sparrows were shown to decrease as livestock operations decreased, 1978-1984. Birds with young or acting territorial were a Brown Creeper on Huron Island, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Scarlet Tanagers near Elkader, a Northern Mockingbird at Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve, and Orchard Orioles at Nye Cemetery. A Chestnut-sided Warbler was found singing in Grundy County and documented, a Black-necked Stilt was documented at Union Slough NWR, and a Great-tailed Grackle was documented at the IPL Cooling Ponds. Cuculidae were not very common, but Yellow-throated Vireos were in high numbers for southwest Iowa. He reported that Margaret M. Anderson had told him that the Iowa Bald Eagle nest at "Dead Haines" (in Allamakee County) had fledged two young. Fourteen Bald Eagles were seen near Lansing and New Albin in the spring, along with nine other bird species, but status of their nests was uncertain. Among eight species observed in the summer, Winter Wrens were heard singing and Orchard Orioles were seen at Wantea Point.
